Those interested in Orthodox iconography and its theological and artistic significance are invited to join this year's Friends of Mount Athos (FoMA) (www.athosfriends.org.uk) conference, 'Holy Beauty: the Art and Iconography of Mount Athos', which is being livestreamed worldwide from Cambridge University's Madingley conference centre in Cambridge, UK, from 16-18 October 2026.
This highly visual conference, which is aimed at a lay audience, comprises eight sessions over three days by expert speakers from the Orthodox and iconography worlds who will look at different aspects of iconographic and other art on Mount Athos, past and present.
Our speakers include Father Loukas of Xenophontos who leads a renowned iconography and art workshop on the Holy Mountain; Greek artist Markos Kampanis who is active in the field of church mural painting, with works in St Catherine’s monastery at Sinai, and the monasteries of Vatopedi, Iviron, and Simonopetra on Mount Athos; and the renowned British iconographer Aidan Hart, who will also give a practical demonstration of icon writing over the weekend.
We're particularly pleased that The Very Revd Archimandrite Maximos Constas, Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at the University of Austin, Texas, is travelling from the US to give a lecture and act as conference Co-Chair.
Residential places are available together with day passes and online registration to access the conference sessions 'live' on YouTube. The attached brochure contains details of all the session topics and speakers, along with prices and how to book.
The Friends of Mount Athos ( www.athosfriends.co.uk ) is a UK charity, based in Oxford (Royal Patron King Charles III), which exists to support the monasteries and help widen awareness of the Orthodox faith in all its aspects.
